Joseph of Arimathea, St. John’s College, Cambridge, a photo by TheRevSteve on Flickr.
From the New Testament reading at morning prayer:
When evening had come, and since it was the day of Preparation, that is, the day before the sabbath, Joseph of Arimathea, a respected member of the council, who was also himself waiting expectantly for the kingdom of God, went boldly to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.
(Mark’s Gospel, chapter 15, verses 42-43, NRSV)
A career- if not life-limiting move for a man in Joseph’s position, which must have taken huge courage. We would do well to judge ‘the establishment’ by their actions, not their positions.
