The New Testament reading at morning prayer today is the longer alternate ending of Mark’s Gospel. Two millennia of study haven’t resolved which ending of Mark is ‘correct’. Even the famously Evangelical NIV leaves in the longer ending, contenting itself with a snippy comment about “the most reliable early manuscripts”.

My 15 year old son recently asked his school chaplain (in my hearing) “Do you get annoyed with people who think every word in the Bible is literally true?”.

I have trained him well…
