Today the church remembers Barnabas:
There was a Levite, a native of Cyprus, Joseph, to whom the apostles gave the name Barnabas (which means ‘son of encouragement’).
(Acts of the Apostles, chapter 4, verse 36, NRSV)
To encourage someone is to fill them with courage, and it’s a big deal.
I get lots of encouragement from all sorts of people, but it’s fragile stuff – a bad day or a negative remark can instantly deplete my entire stock of courage until another Barnabas can come along and en-courage me again.
I doubt I am unique, so let’s all get going and dish out some courage…
